Refreshing or Revolting: 2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo

BMW is forever filling – or creating– automotive niches with new models to keep its clientele satisfied and coming back to their showrooms. The automaker recently revealed the all-new 2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo that occupies a sportier space than the recently discontinued BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo. Here is a look at the new 6 Series GT’s stlying compared to the outgoing 5 Series GT.

Up front, the new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo’s headlights look more like those on the current 7 Series sedan with squared off LED headlight rings instead of round halos. The lower and wider twin-kidney grille, along with a lower hood and larger lower fascia intakes, gives the new car a more aggressive stance.

Along the side, the 6 Series Gran Turismo’s longer overall length (201.9 inches versus 197.1 inches), lower beltline, shallower greenhouse, and slight ducktail rear lip spoiler give it a lower and sleeker profile. The 5 Series GT’s rear quarter window’s Hofmeister kink has been inverted on the new 6 Series GT. Its ground clearance and overall height give the new car a more car-like and less SUV-like stance.

From the rear three-quarter view, the 6 Series GT’s rear greenhouse looks less bulbous than the bloated 5 Series GT. Though it’s not, the new car’s rear glass almost appears concave compared to the convex rear glass on the outgoing model. The look emphasizes the 6 Series Gran Turismo’s rear lip spoiler.

The new car also looks lower and more car-like from the rear angle. The LED taillights and large trapezoidal exhaust tips give it a more aggressive and sporty look.

Inside, the 6 Series Gran Coupe gets a floating infotainment screen as well as a revised dashboard, center stack, center console, and steering wheel.

The 2018 BMW M5 ushers in a new era for the 32-year-old sport sedan nameplate, bringing with it the first application of all-wheel drive since its introduction and 600 twin-turbocharged ponies. Those improvements will likely make it a more capable performer than the model it replaces, but how does its styling compare? Take a look at the galleries below and decide for yourself below.

The new M5 has the standard G30-generation 5 Series to thank for its large, narrow headlights that sport fancy three-dimensional LED accents inside. Those lamps now connect to the dual-kidney grilles, unlike the last generation that had headlights inset from the grille and separated by the top portion of the bumper. The lower half of the front end still sports three distinct intake openings, but they’re much larger on the 2018 model.

From the side, the new M5 is pretty similar to the old model, but somehow looks sleeker and better proportioned. The characteristic front fender vent returns but is positioned diagonally, with a chrome element that lines up with the character line that runs across the side of the body. Interestingly, the Air Breather vent found on the lower front fender of the standard 5 Series is deleted on the M5.

The rear end is an evolution of the previous 5 Series’ rump, with wider horizontal taillights and a more sculpted bumper. The M Division’s characteristic quad tailpipes again make an appearance on the M5, and the trunklid gets a subtle ducktail spoiler molded into it.

The interior follows BMW’s recent styling trends, using a free-standing central screen in place of the old recessed display. The new M5’s cabin looks a lot like the interior in the standard 5 Series, but receives red accents on the shift knob and paddle shifters, and unique front sport seats.

What do you think? Does the new M5 advance the sport sedan’s styling enough, or does it just deliver more of the same?

2018 BMW 6-series Gran Turismo Photos and Info | News

June 2017 By JENS MEINERS View 56 Photos

If you’ve wondered why the successor to the BMW 6-series will be called the 8-series, even though it will be virtually identical in size, it’s because of this car: the 6-series Gran Turismo, which is moving up from its previous 5-series designation and taking on the number that once denoted BMW’s sexiest coupes.

Despite the number change, BMW’s big hatchback is positioned in the same niche and has exactly the same wheelbase as its predecessor. The proportions, however, have been tweaked to some effect. The new model is 3.8 inches longer and 1.0 inch lower than the outgoing model, while width is virtually identical. That’s not a huge difference, yet the new car is a bit more pleasing to the eye than the ungainly 5-series GT. Sure, the Hofmeister kink is twisted beyond recognition, and we can’t for the life of us draw a connection to really any 6-series in history, but we don’t see many people who believe the Tesla Model X is beautiful having a beef with this Bimmer.

Some of the predecessor’s noted quirks have disappeared. The space-consuming partition between the rear seats and the trunk is gone; it was there to isolate the cabin from the opened hatchback, but BMW has figured out that the rear seats will do just fine isolating the cabin. And the complex liftgate, which could be opened in its entirety or by a separate trunklid aft of the rear window, is scrapped in favor of a simple one-piece hatch. The previous system, in BMW’s words, allowed trunk access “without disturbing the rear passengers.” We think the kids and any chauffeured adults will be able to cope with the one-piece liftgate just fine.

Especially since the driver may be in a far better mood. For the European model, BMW claims the new car is lighter than the outgoing model by an average of 330 pounds, which should translate into superior performance both in a straight line and on twisty back roads.

In the U.S. market, we only get the 640i Gran Turismo xDrive, which means it’s equipped with all-wheel drive and BMW’s turbocharged B58 3.0-liter inline-six, rated at 335 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Unsurprisingly, there is just one transmission: the ubiquitous ZF 8HP eight-speed automatic. The stated zero-to-60-mph time is an energetic 5.1 seconds; fuel-economy figures, however, are not yet available.

Entered through generously sized doors with frameless windows, the interior is spacious and well equipped, and it looks particularly good with the ivory white seats, one of three optional nappa leather colors (other dakota leather hues are available as standard). The conservatively styled dashboard comes straight from the 5-series sedan. And there is a cavernous trunk, capable of holding between 31 and 65 cubic feet of stuff. Like all of BMW’s Gran Turismo models, the 6-series GT boasts a raised seating position, the downside of which is a raised center of gravity, a detriment to handling.

The appearance inside and out can be tailored with different trim levels. The standard model is dubbed Sport, but there’s also a Luxury trim and an M Sport package—which is as close as this car will get to an actual M model.

One 6-series tenet to which this model will hold dear is in commanding a significant premium over the 5-series on which it’s based. It will roll into dealerships this fall with a starting price of $70,695, $10,950 more than a 540i xDrive sedan and $6500 over the outgoing 535i xDrive Gran Turismo. But the Gran Turismo is not a 5 anymore—it’s a 6, so it must be worth more.

2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo First Look

BMW took the wraps off of the 2018 6 Series Gran Turismo. Measuring 200.9 inches long, 74.9 inches wide, and 60.6 inches tall, the 6 Series Gran Turismo is a full-size car that combines elements of a sedan, crossover, hatchback, and coupe into one vehicle. Many of the components of the 2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo—including the tailgate—have been built with aluminum to keep the car’s weight down. Only one model will be offered, the 640i xDrive Gran Turismo, which starts at $70,695 USD.

From the front, the 2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo looks like the flagship 7 Series with a similar headlight design and standard adaptive full LED headlights and hexagonal LED light accents. The car’s twin kidney grille has also been revamped and now features active grille shutters to improve aerodynamics. It works in conjunction with the air curtains and air inlets on the side of the car. Out back, the 6 Series Gran Turismo features an active rear spoiler that deploys at speeds of over 75 mph (121 km/h) to help reduce lift and improve its drag coefficient.

Inside, the 6 Series Gran Turismo features a five-seat layout with 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats that are power operated and have been tailored with long drives in mind. With the rear seats down, BMW says there’s up to 65 cubic feet of cargo space. The load height has also been lowered by 2 inches. Front sport seats are standard, and multicontour seats are optional. The rear bench layout can also be swapped in favor of electrically adjustable comfort seats that recline. The 6 Series Gran Turismo also features a slightly taller ride height than your average sedan or hatchback.

On the tech side of things, the 2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo comes standard with iDrive 6.0, which features a 10.25-inch touchscreen and navigation. A 1,400-watt Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system and Apple CarPlay compatibility are optional. BMW’s Active Driving Assistant, which combines active blind-spot warning, lane departure warning, daytime pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and speed limit info. You can also upgrade the 6 Series Gran Turismo’s active safety feature suite with the Driving Assistant Plus package, which adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function, active lane keeping assist with side collision avoidance, traffic jam assistant, evasion aid, and front cross-traffic alert. The adaptive cruise control system can bring the car to a complete stop and automatically start moving again after 30 seconds.

The only powertrain option is a 3.0-liter turbo I-6 with 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. BMW estimates that the 640i xDrive Gran Turismo will do the 0–60-mph run in 5.1 seconds. The transmission also takes data from the navigation system so that it can engine brake or prevent unnecessary gear changes when taking turns. In Eco Pro mode, the coasting function activates and decouples the powertrain between 30 and 100 mph (48 and 161 km/h) when the driver lifts off the gas.

There’s also a new suspension layout with control arms up front and a five-link setup in the rear. The rear axle also comes standard with an air suspension with an automatic self-leveling function to maintain the car’s ride height and control vibrations. An adaptive suspension system comes as part of the Dynamic Handling package and adds a two-axle air suspension plus Dynamic Damper Control to improve ride and handling. The two-axle air suspension also allows the driver to manually raise the car by 0.78 inch or lower it by 0.39 inch. At over 22 mph (35 km/h), the car lowers itself back to its normal height and then to its lowest setting at over 75 mph (121 km/h). In addition to Comfort, Sport, and Eco Pro modes, the adaptive suspension also adds Comfort+ and Adaptive modes, the latter of which uses navigation data to adjust the way the car responds when you take turns and approach intersections.

Other available features in the 2018 6 Series Gran Turismo include a new head-up display that projects information in a larger area, a parking assistant that can get you into a parallel or perpendicular space, and the remote control parking system that allows you to use the display key to park your car. The 6 Series Gran Turismo also features car-to-car communication that receives and sends out accident and hazard warnings to other vehicles. There’s also an On Street Parking information service integrated into the navigation system that helps you find available parking spaces on the street.

The 2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo goes on sale this fall.

BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo:
